More than 50yrs. after its introduction as the Lotus Seven, the Caterham 7 can still embarrass almost all supercars on the track and has an unmatched ability to put a smile on every driver's face.
Autocar's 'Greatest Road Tests of all Time' says about the Caterham Seven R500: Half a century on, the genius of Colin Chapman's creation still shines through. Basic versions of the Seven are best, but the R500 makes it here thanks to its truly ludicrous acceleration and remarkable grip."
We can't offer you an R500 but our newly acquired blue and yellow SV cars have all the horses you'll need for road use. The blue car replaces the orange car which has served us well over the last three years and has now gone into semi-retirement to a new home. The car is identically specced to the orange one. with the Caterham close ratio six speed box .This is the 1.8 Rover power unit that used to haul around almost two tonnes in the old Land Rover Freelander. Imagine how eager it feels after shedding 70% of that weight. Our other SV in yellow with carbon wings differs in having the five speed box which is better suited for touring. Note that fourth in the five speed box is the same ratio as sixth in the six speed box! For any type of road use, the 1.8 K-series has so much torque for the weight of the car that a two or three speed box would suffice. The yellow car also has the luxury of a draught-reducer between the head-rests.
If you think of Rover only as the now defunct manufacturer of some stuffy family cars, then be prepared to be disillusioned. In this super-lightweight car you'll discover the reason why the old K-series was used as the mainstay for Caterham, Lotus and MG for so long and is still held in high regard in racing circles.
The Caterham Seven evolved from the legendary Lotus Seven designed by Colin Chapman back in the 1950s. His philosophy was that the lighter the car the better; it will accelerate, brake and change direction faster even with a modestly tuned everyday car engine, continues to this day. When Lotus ceased production of the Seven in 1973, then main agents, Caterham Cars, took over production and have continued to develop and improve the car for both track and road use. Our new cars may share the same appearance, but these are certainly no "old classics", but thoroughly modern sport cars which continue to set the standard for performance, handling and comfort. |
