This is a relatively direct route to and from Kinloch Rannoch. A few short sections of the road feature in both directions; the remainder of the tour takes the form of three loops. Roads comprise a mix of quiet A, B and single-track.
Leaving Perth and heading west towards Crieff, after a few miles, just before Methven, you’ll turn north on to quiet country roads by Buchanty to the Sma Glen. Watch out for a left at Amulree and drive along Glen Quaich before you tackle the spectacular climb up to the high moors and over and down to Kenmore.
After a short trip along Loch Tay, you’ll turn north to Fortingall with its ancient Yew tree and pretty thatched cottages. Further north don’t miss the scenic short-cut by Schiehallion to Kinloch Rannoch. Here you have the option to drive around the loch and even on to the remote Rannoch Railway Station.
On your return leg you’ll follow the River Tummel to Loch Tummel, south by Glengoulandie and on to Aberfeldy. Head down to Amulree and the Sma Glen again but this time, continue on to Gilmerton, where you’ll cross the busy A85 and take the less busy Madderty road back to Perth.
Distance approx 111 miles.
