This route covers basically the same course as Route 8 but clockwise and with minor variations. You’ll begin heading for Doune in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, by way of Kinkell Bridge, Auchterarder and Braco on quiet country roads largely avoiding the busy A9.
From Doune you’ll travel through the National Park to Callander (aka Tannochbrae if you’re over a certain age.) Then follow the A81 to Port of Mentieth on the shores of Scotland’s only natural lake; the hotel there has the most perfect setting by the water’s edge.
On to Aberfoyle in the heart of the Trossachs and you’ll head north, over the famous Duke’s Pass and through the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, to Brig O’ Turk. Follow the shores of Loch Venachar eastwards then Loch Lubnaig north with views of Ben Ledi.
Continue north through Strathyre and you can detour to Rob Roy’s grave at Balquhidder, then carry on to just before Lochearnhead where you’ll take the South Lochearn single-track road along the loch-side to St. Fillans. Follow the A85 to Comrie from where you’ll take quiet country roads, skirting Crieff, back to Perth.
Distance approx 116 miles.
