Incorporating: the Sma Glen, Glen Quaich, Kenmore, Aberfeldy, Grandtully, Pitlochry, Kirkmichael, Glen Isla, Kirriemuir, Blairgowrie and Dunkeld.
Mostly quiet A roads along with our favourite single-track hill-climb and two short stretches on the A9. You'll take the Crieff road briefly before opting for the much quieter "back road" to Crieff via Madderty. Just short of Crieff you'll turn north and cross the A85 at Gilmerton and drive up through the pretty Sma Glen. Take a left at the small hamlet of Amulree and follow Glen Quaich before a series of hairpin bends and a step climb to the high moorland plateau with great views back the glen and ahead over Kenmore and on to Ben Lawers. You'll enjoy an equally sudden drop down to Loch Tay and Kenmore. There's a choice of stops here; a snack at the water's edge at the Taymouth, the Famous old Kenmore Hotel (the gents' toilet alone is worth a visit - even if you don't have to go) or the Courtyard Centre for food and gifts. Follow the Tay to Aberfeldy, Grantully and Ballinluig and join the A9 a few miles up to Pitlochry. On to Straloch and Kirkmichael and join the A93 before taking the lovely Glenisla road to Kirriemuir. Home via Blairgowrie and Dunkeld. |
