This route takes you to and around the "Trossachs and Loch Lomond National Park" via Crieff, Loch Earn and Crianlarich, returning by Dunblane, Doune and Callander with country lanes largely avoiding the busy dualled A9.
Heading west from Perth, you'll enjoy the quieter Madderty road rejoining the A85 in Crieff then on to St Fillans where you have the choice of taking the loch-side single track to Lochearnhead. On to Crianlarich and down to the quieter north end of Loch Lomond with a detour over to Loch Long an upper reach of the Firth of Clyde. Return by Glen Douglas to Loch Lomond to Balloch and you'll head home by the A811 to Doune and Callendar. Fans of Monty Python, and who isn't, may be interested to visit Doune Castle, just at the edge of the village It featured in their search for the Holy Grail. Every year on a date in September, fans dress up and gather to perform classic sketches from the film. That's the one day you won't get near without a ticket. Heading home, you'll run parallel to the A9 on country roads before joing the dual carriageway for the last few miles home. |
